Just three words....reel it in.
Has horror movies in mainstream hollywood declined so badly that they need to depend on remakes of a classic horror movie or a novel to get it out of the hole that its in? Just you know this isn't an attack on the Carrie remake that has already came out but just wanted to point something out. It really didn't need a remake.
I respect the effort that the two stars of the movie put out and the movie did look like it was trying, which is more than I can say for most remakes, however it still falls under the cash grab remake. A horror movie that mainstream hollywood decides to remake just for the soul purpose of putting butts in seats.
Carrie has been remade so many times that I actually felt that they were beating a dead horse by remaking it again.
There were some satisfying moments, the roaring rampage of revenge. Still doesn't ignore the fact that a remake wasn't needed but I wouldn't go as far as to call it a horrible movie since there was some effort put in but not enough to put this movie in the same category with other gems like John Carpenters The Thing or Dawn of The Dead because of the fact that it was scene for scene. It didn't really do anything innovative. You know, some would find this ridiculous but I don't care. Have Carrie's mom be a psychic and the two have a psychic showdown. Least that would have been a curveball.
I happen to get a hidden message to this. With the string of anti-bullying stuff going on one could confuse the Carrie remake as a anti-bullying propaganda film. Although it makes me a little concern with the message it's giving. Ok replace psychic powers in the movie with someone going on a shooting rampage. Yeah not a message I'd recommend with what has been going on as of late.
Would I recommend this movie to anyone? Only if you have nothing to watch but honestly watch Chronicle instead since thats the closest to a good Carrie remake I've seen.
Still mainstream hollywood, it wouldn't kill you to do something original. Especially since the foreign films are kicking your butts when it comes to horror.
While I agree, there is one big nitpick I have: The Blood Scene. When the blood drops onto Carrie, it should have been quick and sudden. From the characters perspectives, it's coming out of nowhere and we should have seen that.
ReplyDeleteInstead...we see the same shot, three times, of the bucket turning over and pouring on Carrie before it all comes down.
That...that just took me out of it. Thankfully the rampage right afterwords made up for it.
And thinking about it...is everybody at the school a colossal dick? Now granted, you expect Chris and her posse to be monsters, fine. But from what we are shown there are only three good students out of all of them: Carrie, Sue and Tommy, not counting the gym teacher lady.
I mean, crap, every scene with Carrie walking around in the school is full of the students snickering and laughing and mocking her. Hell, there's a shot of lockers and a student writing Carrie White is a *bleep* on it.
Okay...what.the.freaking hell. Who does that? You can't just get away with that, hundreds of people would see it, school camera's would see it, you would be BONED if that happened.....and it is never brought up.
Given how hard Chris got slammed by the school, that Locker Student should have been hunted down.
I mean, I know Mark from #4 did similar crap, but they at least give a bs excuse of his dad being a corrupt cop.
Stuff like that just takes you out of it.
Anyway, I've ranted, so I'll just say that the story should have had an all out psychic brawl between Carrie and her mom, ending with Carrie winning, demolishing the town and then having a crossover with Chronicle 2 where she clashes with Matt with the military and government chasing them both.
If not for MOS I would see the battle between Carrie and her mom resemble somewhat like Zod and Superman at the end. And you know what?
DeleteGiven the FACT that Carrie was mildly insane I can forgive her if the collateral damage was something like Metropolis in MOS.
But anyway I know what you mean. Ok I can take it being a small group of people but good lord!!! Outside of a handfull that actually gave a crap to her that movie just once again reminded me why I don't care so much for mainstream hollywood horror. They had to make the victims so cartoonishly unlikable that you just want them to die. Least in Chronicle it was one guy and Andrews dad that drove Andrew over the edge. It wasn't the whole freaking school!!!
Also since the remake is taken in modern day you know what happen? Not only the majority of the student body would get expelled but the school itself could face one massive lawsuit. Also if anyone with half a brain discover what Carrie's mom has been doing to her then Child Services would have been on her in a heartbeat. To sum up the Carrie remake's treatment of Carrie.
It's a live action version of Family Guy with Meg having psychic powers yet still gets treated like crap.
So yeah I put Chronicle in a much higher pedestal since it handles Andrew's torment in a rather realistic way.
Also Andrew vs Matt is one of the best Live Action Flying Brick Battles out there.
DeleteNeo vs Smith, Superman vs Zod (SM2 & MoS), Hancock vs Mary and now Matt vs Andrew.
